APT Testaccio
Located in the Testaccio district in an early 1900s building, between the Lungotevere and the Mattatoio, the apartment overlooks almost entirely the trees and the river, creating a different scenario every season. The renovation focused on the redefinition of the services and a new general concept to make the rooms more functional and compliant with the needs of the new client.
The interior design maintains the original, unaltered, conformation marked by load-bearing masonry, and develops starting from a distributive filter, apparently treated in a neutral, silent way which actually welcomes natural light and color coming from the neighboring rooms, coming alive in a different way depending on the position of the sun and the time of day. Following the nature of the envelope, the general concept recovers the flavors of the past by reinterpreting them in a contemporary way, creating sharp contrasts through the use of light, color and matter.
The intervention began with the restoration of the exposed vaults, the restoration of the window frames, and the recovery of the original painting in the dining room, bringing to light the ancient lambris.
The spaces are punctuated by a play of warm and cold tones: green for the guest bathroom, tan for the linear and modern custom-designed kitchen, crimson red for the living room and light blue for the master bedroom suite. The light filters into all the rooms thanks to the tall iron and glass doors which further enhance the space and contrast with the other materials. Contrast is also repeated for the horizontal surfaces – parquet, resin and grit – and for the furnishings – which range from designed pieces to vintage furniture, from antiques to contemporary design objects – helping create an eclectic and welcoming atmosphere.

Working with Edi, who captures light, colour, and architectural shapes with a curious eye and an intelligent objective, has helped me in various occasions, to read the achievements of my projects in a new way: unexpected. In short, with the help of Edi, I discovered the quality of my work that I did not expect. This has brought value to my being as an architect under two points of view. The first, more immediate, is the one tied to having, at my hand, marvellous portraits of my homes, divided into overviews and details. The second, more important and profound, there has been a concrete tie between my project and the photography, that since the beginning, has generated emotions and finally, even a friendship. Edi is my photographer and she is also my friend. Choosing a good photographer is important, and I suggest you do it following not only the strict objective of professionality, but also using your emotions and the sentimental affinity with the person that you have chosen.
